Oral Cancer Screening

Comprehensive soft tissue exams at every visit to detect oral cancer and other abnormalities early, when treatment is most effective.

Proactive Care for Your Peace of Mind

At every hygiene visit, we examine all the tissues of your mouth—including your gums, cheeks, lips, tongue, and jaw. Many patients are surprised by the large surface area we carefully check during an oral exam. Regular soft tissue screenings are just as important as your professional dental cleaning.

Why Oral Cancer Screening Matters

Oral cancer can affect anyone, although tobacco users face significantly higher risk. Chewing tobacco contains up to 3,000 different chemicals, including compounds used in pesticides and embalming fluid. Cellular changes below the surface aren't always visible until they've reached a critical stage.

Early detection and treatment can dramatically increase your chances of a quick and complete recovery. The American Cancer Society reports that about 7,000 deaths result from oral cancer out of 30,000 cases diagnosed annually. If we notice any unusual changes in your mouth tissue, we may recommend a biopsy and microscopic analysis by a qualified lab.

Beyond Cancer: Other Tissue Changes

Many non-cancerous changes can occur in your mouth's tissue, from oral warts to autoimmune lesions. Our team has extensive training in oral pathology to identify both cancerous and benign tissue. Our doctors will evaluate any abnormalities and determine whether they should be monitored or removed.

Support for Tobacco Cessation

We understand tobacco holds strong addictive powers over even the most health-conscious people. If you're determined to quit, we want to support you. Talk to your hygienist or our doctors about the strategies and resources we have available to help you kick the habit.

How it works
01

Visual and Tactile Examination

During your hygiene visit, we carefully examine your gums, cheeks, lips, tongue, and jaw for any unusual changes or abnormalities.

02

Evaluation and Discussion

If we notice anything unusual, we'll discuss our findings with you and explain whether monitoring or further testing is recommended.

03

Biopsy if Needed

For suspicious tissue, we may suggest a biopsy and microscopic analysis by a qualified lab to determine the exact nature of the change.

04

Treatment or Monitoring Plan

Based on results, we'll create a personalized plan—whether that's removal, ongoing monitoring, or referral to a specialist.

Common questions
How often should I have an oral cancer screening?+

We perform a thorough soft tissue screening at every hygiene visit—typically every six months. This regular monitoring helps us catch any changes early.

What are the signs of oral cancer?+

Warning signs include sores that don't heal, white or red patches, lumps or thickening tissue, persistent pain, and difficulty chewing or swallowing. Many early changes aren't visible to patients, which is why professional screenings are so important.

I don't use tobacco. Am I still at risk?+

Yes. While tobacco users have significantly higher risk, oral cancer can affect anyone. Regular screenings are important for all patients, regardless of tobacco use.
